On Saturday, July 29th, under cloudy skies, 70 people gathered at the flag pole of the Eden Woolley House Museum in Ocean Township during this centennial year of the US entry into World War I for a flag-raising to honor the memory of those veterans who went off to “make the world safe for democracy.”. The ceremony organized by the Township of Ocean Historical Museum was held in conjunction with its new exhibit “NJ and the Great War: Local Stories of World War I”.
Boy Scouts from Troop 71 of Oakhurst conducted the flag raising while piper Boyd Moore accompanied the ceremony on the bagpipes. World War II Marine veteran, Lou Parisi spoke of the cause and impact of World War I, Freeholder John Curley presented the Museum with a proclamation, Museum President Paul Edelson read a proclamation from Assembly members Houghtaling and Downey, and Museum member Don Bruno read the names of 80 World War I veterans from the Ocean Township monument and those submitted by local families.
Following the ceremony guests were invited into the Museum for refreshments and to view the World War I exhibit that traces the cause, the carnage, and the aftermath of a war that still haunts us today.
The Township of Ocean Historical Museum is a 501(c)(3) charity, and a 100% volunteer organization, that tells the story of Coastal Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA.
