Remembering Our World War II Veterans




Pfc. James F. Byrnes U.S. Army
299th Engineer Combat Battalion. Pfc Byrnes volunteered on March 1, 1944, as he was too old to be drafted.  He felt compelled as his brother Martin was serving in Germany.  Pfc Byrnes was awarded ribbons for: The Asiatic Pacific Theatre; Philippines Liberation; American Theatre; and the Victory Medal. Pacific Theatre.




Tech. Sgt. Roy William Schadt, U.S. Army
August 1944 in France, Sergeant Schadt's platoon was pinned down by intense machine gunfire.  Under heavy fire and with no regard for his personal safety, Sergeant Schadt went out in the open and found a more secure route.  He then led his platoon, directing fire to finish the attack. Sergeant Schadt was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.  European Theatre.



The Township of Ocean Historical Museum, founded in 1984, is a member-supported, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, incorporated under the laws of the State of New Jersey. Its headquarters, the Eden Woolley House, is one of the few 18th-century structures still in existence in the Township. The museum serves as the ancestral home to every citizen of the Township of Ocean. The Township of Ocean Historical Museum offers exhibits on the history of coastal Monmouth County and a full calendar of events. The Museum is also 100% volunteer supported, with no paid staff. The Museum maintains a library and archive, which houses manuscripts, books and photographs of historical and genealogical interest.
