As a squad leader of infantrymen and a platoon of tanks that were sent to rescue several squads of infantrymen cut off from the main body, he was wounded by an exploding bazooka shell as it hit the lead tank upon which he was riding. With no regard for his personal safety, he led his men on foot through enemy fire to complete the mission. He brought back wounded soldiers and an enemy prisoner. Additionally, he brought back valuable information on the enemy from friendly troops in Echternach. Served in the European Theatre.
